growth advice that doesn’t work in 2023 (and only triggers unfollows)

“just do you.”

Do you, just remember, it's not really about you.

Make sure you are intentionally scrolling for inspiration for your specific core content blocks that will serve your audience.

Enjoy TikTok and Instagram as users, but make sure you schedule time dedicated to the opposite of mindless scrolling.

Social media success takes work and a whole lot of research about what’s working in your niche and what your personal audience responds to the most.

Ignoring this weekly success requirement could mean missing out on valuable content opportunities and new engagement tactics.

Start scrolling more to understand and apply what you learn, and I guarantee your content will get better.

“you need to hop on trends.”

If you can’t make the trend fit your personality or your audience's needs or interests, don’t even bother.

Like if ya’ll saw me dancing on TikTok, you would be like…🧐

Clearly define your niche and YOUR WAY of communicating your uniqueness, and stick to it.

The short attention spans of social media users mean it's crucial to clearly define who you are, who you serve, and what you share as soon as someone lands on your profile.

Brand continuity over everything, so even in a quick scroll, they remember it’s you.

“just post it!”

No, no, no. In 2023, it’s all about value.

If it’s not valuable, I wouldn’t post it.

Anything invaluable is what your private personal account is for.

Posting content that doesn't serve, inspire, or educate your audience will likely flop.

Being valuable is the fastest way to steady growth and brand recognition.

It's critical to understand your audience's needs, challenges, and interests and to provide content that aligns with these factors.

“you don’t have to have a hook.”

Not using hooks in your content is a bad idea. Not using a captivating hook is an even worse idea.

A compelling opening statement that grabs your reader's attention is key to preventing people from scrolling past your content.

You’ve got 3 seconds to grab them.

Make 'em count, bb.

“just post what you like and stick to what you’ve always done.”

Ignoring your analytics tab is the #1 reason I feel a lot of creators don’t grow.

They just post what they like and what they assume their audience will respond to.

Yes, most creators check their analytics.

They don’t listen to learn, though.

They don’t analyze and quickly apply.

If your reach is consistently low, your content quality is simply not hitting the mark for your audience.

There are only so many times we can blame our lack of growth on the platform.

Regularly checking your social media analytics to understand what content is performing well and what isn't can help you refine your strategy and produce better content that makes people want to engage with your content and follow you for more.

Something I always tell my clients is to remember the math. It doesn’t matter if I feel 1+1 should = 500.

What are the actual facts?

If the math is consistently showing 1+1 = 2, it’s 2.

Stop reproducing content that isn’t getting good viewership and engagement.

You cannot force something to work. You have to be honest with yourself about the content and production quality.

  • Was my message clear?

  • Was my photo or video high-resolution?

  • Is my content annoying or too negative?

  • Am I just saying the same thing over and over?

A successful social media career is a 100% brutally honest personal relationship with yourself; always remember that.

✅ Don’t get lost in the noise.

✅ Move on to another subject type in your niche.

✅ Try filming from a different perspective.

✅ Draw new inspiration from your broader vertical.

✅ What are other creators who are growing posting about?

✅ What is their persona?

“don’t come off pushy about your personal products.”

We live in a digital world where a billion and one things are happening at once, and we all experience a million distractions a day.

Be pushy because most people will not take the time to research if you sell something and why they should buy it.

Followers eventually become buyers if you do it right.

You have to believe in yourself and your products enough to promote them consistently.

Take advantage of Instagram’s shopping features to help you turn followers into customers.

Ignoring these features could be a missed opportunity.

“it doesn’t matter when you post.”

Consistency in terms of quality and frequency of posting is more important than posting every day.

Remember, you are developing and nurturing relationships with people online.

It's basically like dating hundreds or even thousands of other people at once—hello, Swiping America on steroids.

It’s a lot.

If you disappear, you are not top of mind.

If you don’t build consistency, you are not top of mind.

If you post when they aren’t around, it’s impossible for them to connect with you.

Find a schedule you can commit to producing the HIGHEST level of content quality YOU can.

That doesn’t mean Michael Bay production level.

That doesn't mean a sh*t ton of editing and color grading.

It means engaging subject matter, quality hooks, and cuts, and your lens ain’t nasty.

You feel me?

Let’s stop accidentally serving iPhone 4 nostalgia.

That is not the vibe.

Clean that sh*t, and no shaky bakey hands.

Control your lighting in your camera settings.

Overexposure in video is too common and really unengaging to watch.

“you can post this video to all your channels.”

Sometimes yes, but most times no.

Different social media platforms serve different purposes better, so it's crucial to tailor your content to each platform.

TikTok is not Instagram, YouTube is not Instagram, and Shorts are not TikTok.

Yet you can have much of the same yet slightly different audience on each, which means you can experience totally different engagement on each platform as well.

You can film one video with three different hooks that you test on other platforms and edit that specific content piece according to each platform.

Four engaging videos for the price of one.

That is how you grow and keep your peace of mind and time as a content creator.

Learn the platforms individually and what resonates with tonality, cuts, topics, and pace on each.

“you don’t need to respond to everyone.”

You are not Beyoncé...yet. You do.

Unless it’s a spam comment or an inappropriate asshole, you really should respond.

You’re not getting more followers, you’re growing a community, and that is only done through building individual relationships.

Engaging with your audience by replying to comments, messages, and mentions can help build a strong community around your brand.

Concluding thoughts

The constantly evolving landscape of social media makes it essential for us to stay updated and critically evaluate our content strategies regularly.

The strategies that once resulted in tremendous growth may now trigger unfollows and hamper your brand image.

Always remember to prioritize authenticity and engagement over numerical growth, because at the end of the day, the strength of your social media presence is measured by the quality of the connections you make, not just the quantity.

As we move forward into 2023 and beyond, let's focus on building sustainable, meaningful relationships with our communities, rather than chasing outdated tactics that no longer serve us 🖤
